Love. Movies, books, poetry. So much has been written about it. Most of our understanding about love is from popular culture – the old Disney movies where the Princess is rescued by the Prince and finds true love. One of my favorite quotes about love actually begs to differ. It is from the Sufi poet Rumi and goes like this: “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” Listening to the radio today, I heard a favorite song from Mariah Carey. It reflects what for me is really true love. Listen to it here and read my wish for us all for Valentine’s Day:

“Hero”

There’s a hero
If you look inside your heart
You don’t have to be afraid
Of what you are
There’s an answer
If you reach into your soul
And the sorrow that you know
Will melt away

[Chorus:]
And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you’ll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you

It’s a long road
When you face the world alone
No one reaches out a hand
For you to hold
You can find love
If you search within yourself
And the emptiness you felt
Will disappear

[Chorus]

Lord knows
Dreams are hard to follow
But don’t let anyone
Tear them away
Hold on
There will be tomorrow
In time
You’ll find the way

My wish for us this Valentine’s Day is that we all find our inner hero. When we find her we will find true love.  After all, it’s been inside us all along.
